Computer Terminology
- Client/Server
- computer software with several client modules and a server module that's connected to them. The clients make requests of the server; the server processes the requests and returns the results to the appropriate client
- FileServer
- a computer that stores files on a network also called a web server
- Ethernet
- a way of networking computers on a local basis (LAN) that allows several computers to transfer data over a communications cable.
- Hub
- a device connecting computers into a network.
- NIC
- network interface card allows computers to communicate over a network
- Port
- the socket to connect one machine to another
- RAID
- Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks a technology that allows computer users to achieve high levels of storage reliability from low-cost and less reliable PC-class disk-drive components, via the technique of arranging the devices into arrays for redundancy.
- Permalink
- a static unique url of a single post on a blog site
- Router
- a device that finds routes to forward data packets between computer networks
- RSS
- Really Simple Syndication is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently changing works such as news headlines
- SSL
- Secure Sockets Layer: an encrypting protocols which provide secure communications on the Internet
- SMTP
- Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) The main protocol used to send emails from server to server on the Internet.
- TCP/IP
- transmission control protocol/internet protocol a set of protocols (including TCP) developed for the internet in the 1970s to get data from one network device to another
- URI
- Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) consists of a string of characters used to identify or name a resource on the Internet.
- AJAX
- javascript a group of interrelated web development techniques used on the client-side to create interactive web applications or rich Internet applications.
- DNS
- Domain Name System: A database system that translates an IP address into a domain name
- Proxy Server
- a server (a computer system or an application program) that acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers
- FTP
- file transter protocol a protocol for transferring data or files from one computer to another
