Course Objectives:

This course is designed to help you build and improve your communication skills as a member of a group. SpCom 100B will introduce you to speech communication on both a practical and a conceptual level. My objectives for this course are:

• To assist you in understanding the dynamics of small group communication
• To provide you with an opportunity to improve your communication skills in a non-threatening, supportive environment
• To assist you in gaining critical thinking skills

Required Textbook:

Effective Group Discussion, 10th ed. by Brilhart, Galanes, & Adams (2001).

Requirements and grading:

Grades will be calculated as follows:

• Individual Presentation :        15 %
• Informative Group Presentation:     20 %
• Group Progress Report :                10 %
• Final Group Presentation :          25 %
• Analysis Paper :          20 %
• Exam :          10 %

Exam:

Monday, July 30 (area: topics covered in weeks 1-5) see Exam Review page for more details.

• The exam will be closed book and comprehensive.

Analysis Paper:

This paper will be due: July 25 in class
